The Bay Checkerspot butterfly (Euphydryas Editha Bayensis) is one of the six rarest butterfly species. It’s also on the verge of extinction. They are endemic to the San Francisco Bay region of California.
The Bay Checkerspot butterfly is on the list of federally threatened species. These beautiful butterflies have a wingspan of a little more than 2 inches. The adult butterflies emerge in early spring. The adult females will lay up to five masses of eggs which contain 2 to 250 eggs each. They usually lay them in March or April.
