In a candid discussion on Tank and J. Valentine’s R&B Money podcast, K. Michelle opened up about her journey creating her 2014 album, “Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?” She also shed light on her experiences working with Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj, addressing claims of song “stealing” and a chain.
The story begins with “Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?” being initially intended for Meek Mill’s album, as per K. Michelle. The talented Memphis singer disclosed that Atlantic Records had paired her with Meek Mill to infuse some love-themed tracks into his repertoire, given his penchant for more intense lyrical content. “Atlantic Records put me in with Meek Mill because he needed some love songs. He was shooting folks in the songs; he need to get some good love stuff,” K. Michelle humorously remarked.
One pivotal moment was when Meek Mill played her the record that would become “Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?” K. Michelle recognized its potential and decided to take the reins. She enlisted the talents of August Alsina and others to enhance the track, only to later discover that Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj were romantically involved.
Contrary to rumors, K. Michelle clarified that there was no romantic involvement with Meek Mill. Instead, her focus was on the music. It was during this period that rumors swirled about Nicki Minaj wanting to take the song away from her and reclaim a chain that had been gifted to K. Michelle by Meek Mill.
“I never slept with Meek, none of that. And then they was like, she wanted to take the record from me, and she said that she had to take back his chain from me. And I never did none of that. I always loved her.”
Eventually, the song did find its way onto Nicki Minaj’s album, “The Pinkprint,” albeit under a slightly modified title, “Buy a Heart.” Interestingly, K. Michelle retained the original title for her sophomore album.
