A Texas courtroom turned emotional as Karmelo Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the murder of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf following a confrontation at a high school track meet.
According to reports, Anthony will be eligible for parole after serving roughly half of his sentence.
Family members on both sides were overcome with emotion during the hearing. Witnesses say Anthony’s mother pleaded for mercy as she sobbed in court, while the teenager reportedly broke down in tears after the verdict was delivered.
The courtroom also heard a powerful victim impact statement from Metcalf’s aunt, who described the devastating phone call she received from Austin’s mother after the tragedy.
“As I drove to the hospital, I never believed Austin could be gone. The impact of his death is permanent,” she told the court.
The case has drawn national attention and sparked ongoing discussions about youth violence, accountability, and the lasting impact such tragedies have on families and communities.
đź’¬ Do you think parole eligibility should be available in cases involving violent crimes committed by juveniles? Do you think this case was fair?
