Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI dies at the age of 95. The Vatican announced Saturday that the former Pope Benedict died after a period of ill health.
Global leaders worldwide are paying homage to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was the first pontiff in almost 600 years to resign his position rather than hold office for life.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola tweeted, “Saddened to learn of the demise of His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.“
“Europe mourns him. May he rest in peace.”
Benedict was a conservative enforcer of Catholic doctrine for decades and became pope in 2005.
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s funeral will be held in St. Peter’s Square on January 5. His body will lie in state in St. Peter’s Basilica from Monday.
