Lil Wayne, known for his masterful lyricism and influential record label, Young Money/Cash Money, has shared his own ranking of the greatest rappers in a recent Billboard cover story.
In celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary this month, Weezy highlighted his top five G.O.A.T. rappers, emphasizing that the list has no specific order. The talented artists who made it to his list are Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, UGK, Goodie Mob, and The Notorious B.I.G.
During the interview with Gail Mitchell, Billboard’s executive director of R&B and hip-hop, Lil Wayne explained that his choices were deeply rooted in his organic upbringing. He acknowledged that everyone has a unique story of how they started listening to hip-hop, and his selections reflect his genuine connection to these iconic figures.
Despite his own remarkable No. 7 ranking on Billboard and Vibe’s Greatest Rappers of All Time list, Lil Wayne humbly expressed his joy at being anywhere on such a prestigious roster. His contribution to the genre as a lyricist and talent developer for stars like Drake and Nicki Minaj has solidified his place among rap’s most influential figures.
Missy Elliott had this to say about Lil Wayne, “Whenever @LilTunechi says my name in his interviews twitter don’t have enough space for me tosay my GRATEFULNESS because he is a LEGEND himself who birthed many emcees after him & as a man to acknowledge me as a big influence 4 him I send you love WAYNE.”
Adding, “Another reason this warms my heart is because I’ve seen many times @LilTunechi has said my name over & over for years no matter who the interviewers are he has never been hesitant to say me as a female & for that I am forever GRATEFUL.”
