James Harrison, the Australian man whose rare blood plasma helped save the lives of more than 2.4 million babies, has passed away at the age of 88. Harrison, famously known as “The Man with the Golden Arm,” died peacefully in his sleep at a nursing home in New South Wales on February 17, his family confirmed.
Harrison’s extraordinary contribution to medical science stemmed from his unique blood, which contained the rare Anti-D antibody. This vital component is used to create life-saving injections that prevent a dangerous condition known as haemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN).
The disorder, which occurs when a mother’s blood is incompatible with her unborn child’s, can lead to severe anemia, heart failure, or even death.
Harrison’s journey as a donor began after he underwent major chest surgery at age 14, requiring numerous blood transfusions. Grateful for the donations that saved his life, he vowed to give back. At 18, he started donating his blood plasma regularly… every two weeks… until he was 81 years old.
By 2005, he had set a world record for the most blood plasma donations, a title he held until 2022. His selfless acts led to the creation of anti-D immunisations, which have since protected millions of newborns worldwide.
His daughter, Tracey Mellowship, expressed immense pride in her father’s legacy. “He was always so honored to have helped save so many lives without pain or cost,” she said. “He would always remind people that giving blood doesn’t hurt, and one day, it could save your own life.”
Remarkably, Harrison’s impact extended to his own family… his daughter and two of his grandchildren were direct recipients of the Anti-D injections his blood helped produce. “Knowing that his kindness allowed so many families like ours to exist made him incredibly happy,” Mellowship shared.
The Australian Red Cross Blood Service paid tribute to Harrison, recognizing his unmatched dedication to saving lives. His generosity has left a permanent mark on medical history, and his legacy will continue through the millions of children and families he helped create.
As the world mourns the loss of this extraordinary man, his story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact a single individual can have. James Harrison may be gone, but his “golden arm” will continue to touch lives for generations to come.
