Drake, the Toronto Raptors’ most famous fan and global ambassador, has revealed he’s been sidelined from providing commentary at Raptors games for the next year.
The rap superstar took to his Instagram Story during the Raptors’ home game against the Golden State Warriors on Monday (January 13) to share the news. Despite the setback, Drake appeared to handle the situation with a mix of humor and longing.
“@raptors how long is my headphone ban?? I was born to commentate,” the “God’s Plan” hitmaker wrote, expressing his desire to return to the mic.
In a playful voiceover shared on Instagram, Drake commented: “Good ol’ one-year ban. It is what it is. It was good while it lasted. I’ll be back one day…”
While the exact reason for the ban hasn’t been confirmed, fans are pointing to a controversial moment last November when Drake made some bold remarks about former Raptors player DeMar DeRozan.
During live commentary for a game against the Sacramento Kings, DeRozan’s current team, Drake reportedly called him a “goof” and went so far as to say: “If you ever put up a DeRozan banner, I’ll go up there and pull it down myself.”
Known for his courtside antics and unwavering support, Drake has been an integral part of the Raptors’ culture. His playful banter and deep ties to the team have made him a staple at games.
With fans divided over the ban, many are eager to see if the Raptors will reconsider allowing their most famous cheerleader back on the mic sooner rather than later.
