Meet Zaila Avant-Garde, the 93rd Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion. Zaila won the Spelling Bee championship by correctly spelling the word ‘”Murraya.”
Zaila is the first African American to win the spelling bee in the competition’s nearly 100-year history. Zaila considers her spelling skills a fun hobby and doesn’t think it’s difficult to do. As a result, she was offered a full academic scholarship to both Louisiana State University and Southern University, Fox 8 reports.
Zaila told WWLTV, “Don’t let anybody stop you, don’t let anybody say you can’t, just go for it.”
