In a heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken the community of Midland, Georgia, a father and his son… a local police officer… lost their lives after a tree fell onto their golf cart during a storm.
The victims, 58-year-old Matthew Terrell Collins Sr. and his 29-year-old son, Matthew Terrell Collins Jr., were enjoying a round of golf at Bull Creek Golf Course when severe weather abruptly rolled in on April 6. Seeking shelter from the sudden downpour, the pair parked beneath a tree… a decision that would prove fatal. As high winds battered the area, the tree collapsed, crushing the cart beneath it.
Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed that both men died at the scene. The storm that swept through the region left behind significant damage, with emergency services responding to numerous weather-related incidents throughout the day.
“This appears to be a tragic accident,” said Columbus Fire-EMS Chief Sal Scarpa in a statement to WSBTV. “The police department and the coroner will conduct a full investigation. Our hearts go out to the family during this devastating time. This storm caused incredible destruction across our community.”
The younger Collins, a dedicated law enforcement officer, was well-respected among his peers, and the community is mourning the loss of two beloved individuals. In the wake of this unimaginable tragedy, a GoFundMe page has been launched to support the grieving family.
