A tragic accident has led to the abrupt cancellation of Mexico City’s popular AXE Ceremonia music festival after a crane carrying a large decorative metal element collapsed, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.
The highly anticipated two-day event, which began Saturday at Bicentennial Park and was set to feature major artists like Tyler, The Creator, Massive Attack, and The Marías, came to a heartbreaking halt after the fatal incident occurred during a Saturday performance by Meme Del Real.
According to a statement from Mexico City’s Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection, the structure being lifted by a crane collapsed around 5:30 p.m., fatally injuring two people. Emergency responders provided immediate care at the scene before transporting the victims to a nearby hospital. Sadly, both later died from their injuries.
Local news outlet El Universal identified the victims as Citlali Berenice Giles Rivera, 28, and Miguel Ángel Rojas, 26, both of whom were reportedly working as event photographers.
Authorities have launched an official investigation, led by the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office, to determine the cause of the accident. Initial findings point to a lack of sufficient safety oversight by both festival organizers and officials from the Miguel Hidalgo City Hall, though the probe is still ongoing.
Festival organizers addressed the incident in an emotional post on Instagram, stating: “We are heartbroken to confirm the passing of the two individuals injured in today’s tragic accident. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their families. We are committed to offering our full support during this incredibly difficult time. The safety of our community has always been our top priority, and we continue to work transparently with authorities.”
On Sunday, the remaining events were officially suspended following directives from city officials. AXE Ceremonia organizers confirmed that full ticket refunds would be processed automatically through Ticketmaster.
