In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Tiffany Haddish candidly discussed her 2021 breakup with Common, shedding light on the fact that it wasn’t a mutual decision as widely believed.
During the interview, Haddish fondly described her time with Common as “the healthiest, most enjoyable relationship I’ve ever experienced.” She emphasized that given her past traumas with men, their relationship was a safe haven. However, Common decided to end their relationship in an abrupt manner – via a phone call.
“It wasn’t mutual,” she said. “It was more him saying, ‘I think this relationship has run its course.’ And I was like, ‘Okay. Like you gonna be a 50-year-old single man. Okay?'”
Their relationship first became public knowledge in August 2020 when Haddish confirmed they were dating during an interview on Steve-O’s Wild Ride podcast. Later, in a 2021 interview with Hollywood Unlocked With Jason Lee Uncensored, Common explained that the breakup was a “mutual” decision driven by their busy schedules and inability to fully commit to each other.
Common expressed that the love between them hadn’t faded but rather they were unable to invest the required energy into the relationship due to their respective careers and commitments. He shared, “I don’t think the love really dispersed. I just think it was like we weren’t feeding the relationship. Neither one of us is gonna stop. We both care about our crafts and what we do.
“We care about love too and partnership, but I think the energy that has been put into our careers and continuing to want to do the things that we do for ourselves and for the people, it was hard for me to balance all of that and keep the relationship fed.”
He further elaborated, “We decided this is what’s gonna be best for us, to still continue to love each other and be there for each other but to not be in a romantic relationship, because we won’t be able to give to that. I don’t want to be one foot in, one foot out.”
In a separate interview with Jason Lee, Haddish acknowledged missing Common but expressed acceptance about the split, stating, “I’m fine with it,” said Haddish discussing the split. “I miss him. I miss him from time to time, but that’s with any relationship you might have. You miss them, but I’m fine with it. It’s cool.”
However, Haddish did mention feeling disappointed by Common’s portrayal of the breakup, as it didn’t align with her perspective on how things unfolded on her end. She recalled, “I was very disappointed. I was like, ‘Oh, okay.’ ‘Cause that’s not what you told me, but okay.'”
