A Texas man’s attempt at burglary took an unexpected turn when he ended up calling 911 on himself after getting injured while breaking into a car dealership.
According to the Tyler Police Department, Jeremiah Megallon was caught after he phoned authorities around 3:45 a.m. on Thursday, admitting he had broken into the Patterson Dodge dealership and needed medical assistance.
“He said he had broken in to steal a car but couldn’t get out of the building,” Public Information Officer Andy Erbaugh said. “He had cuts from breaking a window and crawling through it.”
Megallon allegedly attempted to steal a vehicle by hurling a rock through a dealership window. However, he suffered injuries from the broken glass. Adding to the irony, police later discovered multiple unlocked doors that could have allowed him to escape without issue.
“After 26 years on the force, I can tell you… truth is stranger than fiction,” Erbaugh quipped.
While Megallon’s intentions may have been grand, his only successful theft was a piece of candy from a salesperson’s desk. Dealership staff confirmed that aside from the broken window, no other property was damaged.
Following medical treatment, Megallon was transported to Smith County Jail, where he was charged with burglary of a building.
