A man wearing tactical gear opened fire early Monday morning on Border Patrol agents outside a federal building near the McAllen International Airport, sparking chaos in what authorities believe was a planned ambush. The shooter has now been identified as 27-year-old Ryan Louis Mosqueda of Michigan.
According to McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez, Mosqueda unleashed a barrage of gunfire… dozens of rounds… at Border Patrol agents as they arrived at the facility located in the heart of Texas’ Rio Grande Valley. The agents returned fire, fatally striking the suspect on the scene.
The attack occurred just before 6 a.m., prompting a swift response from local and federal law enforcement. Officials say at least one officer was hit during the exchange and rushed to the hospital. Fortunately, the officer is now in stable condition.
The Department of Homeland Security later confirmed that a total of three individuals… including two officers and one Border Patrol employee… were injured, one of whom was shot in the knee.
Chief Rodriguez stated that while a motive remains unclear, Mosqueda had driven to the location in a vehicle with Michigan plates, which had cryptic, spray-painted markings… possibly in Latin… that investigators are still working to decode. He had reportedly been listed as missing from a home in nearby Weslaco just an hour prior to the attack.
The FBI, now leading the investigation, emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public at this time. They are actively working to uncover any deeper motivations or affiliations that may have led to this violent act.
