In a terrifying moment that shook a summer afternoon, 20 people were injured Tuesday after a lightning bolt struck near a busy lake in Lexington County, South Carolina.
Authorities say the lightning hit the water near Dominion Beach Park at Dreher Dam just before 4:45 p.m., sending emergency crews into immediate action. Among the injured were eight adults and 12 minors, all believed to have suffered electric shock-related injuries after the strike.
According to Lexington County Fire Chief Kyle Minick, twelve people were rushed to local hospitals, though thankfully, all injuries were non-life-threatening. Officials confirm everyone is expected to make a full recovery.
The emergency response was rapid and well-coordinated, thanks to the combined efforts of fire, EMS, and sheriff’s departments from across the county. Lexington County officials praised their multi-agency teamwork, which they say was key in quickly assessing and treating victims.
Dominion Beach Park, a popular summer destination, is undergoing safety inspections but is slated to reopen by Wednesday, officials added.
