Shyne, the rapper-turned-politician, has publicly reflected on a controversial moment from his past, admitting that he regrets criticizing Kendrick Lamar’s iconic debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, back in 2012.
The album, which went on to become a cultural milestone, was infamously labeled “trash” by Shyne at the time, a statement he now openly regrets.
During a recent appearance on Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion podcast, Shyne acknowledged his past mistake, sharing, “I would say I made a mistake about Kendrick Lamar. I’ll admit to that. I think that was definitely a mistake.” He went on to express how he now appreciates Lamar’s artistry:
“I think Drake is nice, Drake is incredible, and Lamar has obviously proven me completely wrong.”
Reflecting on his earlier criticism, Shyne explained, “Everybody got it at the time, but I was dealing with whatever I was dealing with, and I didn’t understand it, I didn’t appreciate it.”
His words serve as a humbling reminder that even the most seasoned artists can miss the mark, especially when dealing with personal struggles.
Shyne’s admission comes at a time when Kendrick Lamar has firmly cemented himself as one of the most influential musicians of his generation. Shyne concluded, “He’s obviously proven to be one of the greatest musicians in our generation. That’s one I take back.”
In this moment of growth and reflection, Shyne’s story shows the power of personal evolution in the ever-evolving world of hip-hop.
