An attempted shoplifting incident in Ohio nearly turned deadly when a suspect tried to open fire on a responding police officer inside a Walmart store… but a gun malfunction stopped the shot.
According to authorities, the suspect pulled out a firearm and attempted to shoot the officer during the confrontation. The weapon failed to discharge, giving a Walmart asset protection associate just enough time to rush in and tackle the suspect before he could try again.
Police say the officer chose not to return fire, explaining that he feared a shot could have struck the store employee who had bravely intervened.
The suspect was taken into custody without further injuries. Officials praised the quick-thinking actions of the Walmart employee, crediting them with preventing a potentially fatal outcome.
The incident remains under investigation.
