Nicki Minaj and Joe Budden, along with several other prominent celebrities, find themselves in need of new platforms to host their radio shows as Amazon Amp prepares to close its doors.
The streaming app’s closure, after just a year and a half of operation, has left a void in the world of online radio, leaving hip-hop luminaries in a state of uncertainty following Amazon’s ambitious attempt to redefine the radio experience.
Notable figures such as Pusha T, Tinashe, Lil Yachty, and Big Boi were enlisted to bolster the app’s initial launch. Amazon Amp sought to empower its users, allowing them to act as DJs, curate playlists, and provide commentary over songs from major record labels. Unfortunately, the platform’s grand vision never fully materialized.
Joe Budden, who successfully transitioned into the podcasting arena in 2015, ventured into the world of radio as well. Last year, Budden and Amazon Amp unveiled their collaboration: “Music Lovers Only With Joe Budden,” which premiered in mid-May.
The show aimed to offer a unique experience by utilizing the app’s live call-in features to strengthen the bond between fans and artists. Joe would also curate a weekly playlist of his favorite tracks and provide cultural commentary, offering artists an opportunity to engage with listeners through live calls.
In Joe Budden’s own words, “As music lovers, all we have is each other to share the joy of a great song, a positive vibe, and a set that uplifts the spirit. Find your favorite spot in your home, get comfortable, and join us as we create great moments.”
Furthermore, Nicki Minaj had also aligned herself with Amazon Amp, bringing her popular “Queen Radio” show to the platform. Having originally gained acclaim on Apple Music’s Beats 1, she extended her reach to Amazon, further solidifying her presence in the world of digital radio.
