Former NBA star Nate Robinson has a new lease on life after successfully receiving a kidney transplant. The ex-basketball player took to social media to express his heartfelt gratitude to his donor, Shane Cleveland, for giving him a second chance.
In an emotional post, Robinson shared his appreciation for Cleveland’s selfless act.
“This man literally saved my life by giving me his kidney!!!” he wrote. “Hey Shane, just wanna let you know we are family now & you’re stuck with me.”
Robinson described their bond as “family at first sight” and praised the University of Washington medical team for their exceptional care. Cleveland, responding to Robinson’s message, echoed the sentiment.
“You are so deserving, Nate, and I am proud to be a part of this with you. We both have beautiful families supporting us and great care at UWMC. Let’s go!”
Robinson, who is already feeling stronger post-surgery, plans to celebrate his new kidney by watching the Super Bowl with Cleveland. His agent, Polo Kerber, told CNN that Robinson has been up and walking around the hospital, showing remarkable progress.
The road to this moment has been long. Robinson first learned 20 years ago that he would one day need a kidney transplant. However, he refused to let it hinder his NBA career.
“I just tried to lock it down deep and live my life,” Robinson shared in a 2022 documentary. “I wasn’t going to let this stop me from playing and doing what I love.”
In 2021, Robinson’s kidneys began to fail, forcing him to start weekly dialysis treatments. A year later, he publicly shared his condition and need for a donor. Offers flooded in, especially from the University of Washington community. After extensive testing, Cleveland was identified as the ideal match.
Now, with his new kidney, Robinson is focused on a healthier future. “That kidney I get, I’m going to cherish it. I’m going to treat it like a baby.”
His inspiring journey is a testament to resilience, community, and the power of generosity.
