A teenage surfer who vanished after hitting the waves off the coast of New South Wales has been found alive on a remote island… nearly 8 miles from where he was last seen.
Darcy Deefholts, 19, sparked a major land and sea search Wednesday after he disappeared during a solo surf trip near Wooli Beach. Authorities and family feared the worst when his bike and clothing were found abandoned near a beach access point later that evening.
But in a stunning turn of events, search teams discovered Darcy the next morning on North Solitary Island, a small and isolated stretch of land southeast of Wooli. Despite being cold and suffering from exposure, he was alive, alert, and in stable condition.
“It’s kind of surreal… I was preparing for the worst, but I never gave up hope,” said his father, Terry Deefholts, in an emotional interview.
Darcy had reportedly paddled out too far and got caught in a strong ocean current, pushing him miles from shore. Family members said he likely used his instincts… and a Malibu surfboard believed to be with him… to stay afloat through the night.
Marine Rescue teams and six private boats joined forces at first light Thursday, scanning the coastline and nearby islands. With calm seas and minimal wind, the teen’s disappearance left many puzzled.
“There’s a strong north-to-south current out there. It’s likely he drifted further than anyone expected,” said rescue skipper Matthew McLennan.
Darcy was taken to a local hospital after his dramatic rescue, where he’s now recovering with his loved ones by his side.
“He’s a strong boy and a true survivor,” said family member Melissa Smith. “That island may have saved his life.”
