In a shocking discovery early Tuesday morning, Milwaukee police rescued six children… ranging from just two months old to nine years old… who had been locked inside a storage unit at a StorSafe facility near 27th Street and Silver Spring.
Authorities confirmed that a 33-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were taken into custody in connection with the case. Officers responded around 1:30 a.m. to reports of children trapped in the unit and found the kids unharmed but clearly endangered.
According to the Milwaukee Police Department, the situation is being treated as a serious child abuse and neglect investigation. The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing possible charges.
Neighbors told reporters they had noticed a family lingering around the storage facility in recent weeks, often leaving during the day and returning late at night. Local resident Tonya Lowe said the discovery broke her heart: “We have failed these kids. Children should never be locked away like animals.”
Another woman recalled seeing the children riding bikes near the facility just days before the rescue, expressing disbelief they hadn’t been discovered sooner.
