In a surprising musical alliance, Lil Yachty and J. Cole have joined forces to create their latest single and video, titled “The Secret Recipe.” This unexpected collaboration showcases a blend of live instrumentation and introspective lyrics, adding a unique twist to Lil Yachty’s already impressive track record.
The music video for “The Secret Recipe,” co-directed by Yachty and AMD Visuals, demonstrates the seamless synergy between the Let’s Start Here creator and the 16-time Grammy-nominated J. Cole. Fans last heard from Cole in August when he teamed up with Gucci Mane on Mike Will Made-It’s “There I Go.” Meanwhile, Lil Yachty, at just 26 years old, has been making waves throughout the year with hit singles like “Strike (Holster)” and, most recently, “Tesla.”
Lil Boat, as he’s affectionately known, emphasized his penchant for surprises during a recent interview with Complex’s Ecleen Luzmila Caraballo. He expressed, “I’m just an artist, and you should never expect anything because I will always do something unexpected. Just don’t expect it. … You know, I hate to disappoint, but I’m here to disappoint if you start expecting shit.”
On “The Secret Recipe,” 38-year-old J. Cole takes a moment to assert his influence, rapping, “I’m on your song, your streams going up/Not quite the Drake Effect, but don’t complain b***h, take what you get and cut the label check.”
A press release aptly describes the track as embodying hip-hop’s competitive essence, with both Yachty and Cole venting their frustrations about the rap game while acknowledging their undeniable impact on the culture over their careers.
Although J. Cole has been relatively quiet on the album front since May 2021, he made a significant impact this year by helping propel Lil Durk’s “Almost Healed” single to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has remained on the chart for an impressive 19 weeks and currently holds a solid position at No. 16. Lil Durk himself admitted that Cole “smoked my a** on that.”
