The hip-hop community has been discussing a new all-time greatest rapper list, which currently places Jay-Z at the number one spot. However, Lil Wayne has entered the conversation, claiming the title of the Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T.). During a recent appearance on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music podcast, Lil Wayne expressed his surprise that he was ranked only seventh on Billboard’s 50 Greatest Rappers of All Time list, which was published on Feb. 8.
The list places Biggie, Eminem, Tupac, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay-Z ahead of him. However, Lil Wayne disagrees with this ranking and insists that he is the best, even challenging those ranked higher than him to weigh in on the matter. In his view, he is greater than all of them, particularly among those who are still alive.
The criteria for ranking these rappers is subjective, and it is unclear how Billboard determined their rankings. It appears that Jay-Z was chosen as the top rapper due to his overall success, which he has undoubtedly achieved.
However, Twitter users seem to be agreeing with Lil Wayne’s claim that he is superior to Jay-Z in terms of rap skill and cultural impact, which should be the measure for such a ranking. The fact remains that Lil Wayne is still creating excellent music in 2023, as evidenced by his recent collaboration with DMX, whereas one could argue that Jay-Z is no longer rapping at the same level as he did in his prime.
