Lil Wayne has finally opened up about being overlooked for the Super Bowl LIX halftime show in his hometown of New Orleans, revealing the emotional toll it took on him.
The rapper, known for hits like “A Milli” and “Lollipop,” expressed his disappointment in a heartfelt video shared on Instagram early Friday morning (September 13).
Fans and peers had voiced their frustration after the NFL selected Kendrick Lamar for the coveted performance slot at the February 9 event instead of Weezy.
In the video, a somber Lil Wayne began by thanking everyone who supported him during the backlash. “First of all, I want to say forgive me for the delay. I had to get strength enough to do this without breaking,” he said.
“Thank you to every voice, every opinion, all the care, love, and support out there. Your words turned into arms and held me up when I tried to fall back.”
Wayne admitted the snub deeply affected him, especially after he had openly expressed his desire to perform on such a massive stage in his city. “That hurt. It hurt a lot,” he confessed.
“I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown. I automatically put myself in that position like somebody told me that was my spot.”
Reflecting on the missed opportunity, the Young Money founder explained, “I thought there was nothing better than that stage in my city, so it hurt. But y’all are amazing. It made me feel like sh*t not getting this opportunity, and when I felt like sh*t, you reminded me that I ain’t sh*t without y’all.”
Lil Wayne ended the emotional video by expressing gratitude to his supporters. “I feel like I let all of y’all down by not getting that opportunity, but I’m working on me. Thank you to everyone repping me my peers, friends, family, and homies on sports TV. I really appreciate it.”
While Lil Wayne may not be headlining the Super Bowl halftime show, his words resonated deeply with fans who continue to rally behind him.
