The Kansas City Chiefs received uplifting news on Friday as defensive end BJ Thompson regained consciousness and became responsive after a severe medical emergency on Thursday.
The 25-year-old player had been rendered unconscious following a seizure and subsequent cardiac arrest during a team meeting. His agent, Chris Turnage, informed NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero that Thompson’s condition significantly improved by Friday morning.
Turnage confirmed, “BJ Thompson is now awake and responsive, and his prognosis is good.”
This update is a tremendous relief given the dire circumstances just a day before. Medical personnel had to rush to the Chiefs’ practice facility to provide immediate care.
Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo described the intense atmosphere at the time.
“The team was understandably shaken,” Spagnuolo recounted at a charity softball game on Thursday night. “It was a scary situation for all of us.”
