At the recent Grammy Awards, a potentially epic moment was in the making, as Jay-Z had a surprise lined up for Killer Mike before the latter’s unfortunate arrest.
Killer Mike, the Atlanta-based rapper, shared details of his Grammy experience during an appearance on The Breakfast Club on February 14. Despite winning three awards, his night took an unexpected turn with his arrest shortly thereafter.
During the interview, Killer Mike revealed that Jay-Z had intended to bring him onstage during his acceptance speech for the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, had circumstances allowed.
“Man, it’s wild. Jay was trying to reach me,” he disclosed. “I was caught up in the moment, but Jay was reaching out, saying, ‘Hang tight, I want to acknowledge you.’ Later, he mentioned, ‘I was planning to give you my time.’ Much respect to Hov.”
Charlamagne Tha God, another Breakfast Club host, corroborated Killer Mike’s account, stating that there were indeed plans for Jay-Z to feature Killer Mike on stage.
Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Killer Mike expressed gratitude for Jay-Z’s gesture, acknowledging the message he received post-arrest. “It’s love, though. I appreciate it. I got that text after I got out. Me and him laughing. He said, ‘You want to go and get locked up in the biggest moment ever?!’ I was laughing. It was hilarious, man. You couldn’t do nothing but laugh.”
Despite the setback, the camaraderie between Jay-Z and Killer Mike shines through, highlighting the genuine bond within the hip-hop community.
