Authorities have captured the fifth inmate involved in a dramatic escape from a New Orleans jail, bringing one step closer to closing the case on a breakout that shocked the city.
Louisiana State Police confirmed that 19-year-old Corey Boyd was apprehended in New Orleans after evading law enforcement since last Friday night’s jailbreak. Boyd, initially spotted hours after the escape, had been on the run for several days. He was originally jailed on serious charges including second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and threatening a public official.
He is now facing an additional charge of simple escape and will be transferred to a high-security state facility outside the area, according to a post by state police on Facebook.
Boyd is accused in the fatal 2024 shooting of Brandon Fees during a car burglary. He is the fifth of ten inmates who managed to flee the Orleans Parish Correctional Center in a daring, well-coordinated escape caught on surveillance footage.
Investigators say the inmates slipped through a hole hidden behind a toilet, climbed over a barbed-wire fence, and dashed across a nearby highway into a neighborhood where they changed clothes to avoid detection.
While Boyd is now back in custody, five other escapees remain at large… intensifying pressure on law enforcement to track them down swiftly.
Adding to the scandal, Sterling Williams, a 33-year-old maintenance worker with the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, has been arrested for allegedly aiding the escape. Williams faces 10 counts of principal to simple escape and malfeasance in office. According to Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, Williams told investigators that an inmate had threatened to stab him if he didn’t assist with the breakout.
