Twitter erupted with controversy following Harry Styles’ recent Grammy win, with many claiming that his speech was insensitive and that Beyoncé deserved the award instead.
The 29-year-old British artist won Album of the Year at the Grammys, beating out nominees Beyoncé, ABBA, Bad Bunny, Mary J. Blige, Brandi Carlile, Coldplay, Kendrick Lamar, Adele, and Lizzo.
Styles’ victory was greeted with thunderous applause from the crowd, but many online users were stunned that it wasn’t awarded to Beyonce. Rolling Stone described it as a “stunning” shocker.
Now, fans of Beyonce worldwide are calling for Styles to apologize to her for denying her 33rd win and for a slight remark he made during his acceptance speech.
According to ABC, Beyonce’s recent Renaissance album earned her three Grammy Awards – one for “Break My Soul” in the Best Dance/Electronic Recording category, another for Best Dance/Electronic Album, and a third for “Plastic off the Sofa” in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category.
After winning three more awards, the 41-year-old set a new record for the most Grammy wins of all time. However, her fans felt she deserved even more recognition. They have taken to social media to demand an apology from Styles, as they believe Beyonce should have also won the fourth award for Album of the Year.
Several Twitter comments also referenced Styles’ statement: “This doesn’t happen to people like me often,” with many online users claiming it was hypocritical.
