Twitter’s policy of providing verification services for free, including for corporate accounts, will no longer be in effect, and a fee will be required to attain verified status.
A recent report from The Information indicates that Elon Musk and his team plan to introduce a payment plan for companies and brands who wish to retain their gold checkmark verification status on Twitter. Previously, verification was provided for free for organizations of notable importance.
Matt Navarra, another journalist, seems to have confirmed Twitter’s plans to charge business accounts $1,000 per month for verification services. Affiliate accounts under the larger corporate account will incur an additional monthly fee of $50.
The verification program is named Verified for Organizations, and it seems that Twitter is currently approaching brands to sign up in advance. Brands who decline to pay the fee will lose their gold checkmark verification and appear as unverified users on the platform. The implementation date of this change is currently unknown.
This subscription plan is not applicable to media companies, as they face the risk of impersonation by fraudulent accounts spreading false information. The program appears to be targeted towards corporations such as Target and Bank of America, which are primarily focused on selling products and services for profit. It appears to be a means of generating revenue, as Twitter is currently facing mounting legal challenges and staff shortages.
This is yet another money-making venture from Elon Musk. He is still actively trying to attract users to sign up for Twitter Blue, which costs $8 per month and offers a blue checkmark for individuals who do not meet the criteria for verification. Meanwhile, many established accounts, such as journalists and other prominent individuals, retain their blue checkmarks for free, and public officials now have gray checkmarks.
