A renowned wingsuit flyer was killed during a daring jump from Table Mountain when the descent ended in a devastating impact roughly 1,000 feet below. Authorities say the 32-year-old athlete struck rocky terrain near a well-traveled hiking route after being unable to level off in time, reaching speeds estimated near 120 mph.
The pilot, Brendan Weinstein, was widely respected in the extreme sports world and had amassed an extraordinary resume… more than 1,600 wingsuit flights, 800 BASE jumps, and 1,000 parachute jumps over his career. Originally from Utah, he was also affiliated with Red Bull as a stunt athlete.
Investigators report Weinstein accessed the summit via the cable car and concealed his wingsuit and parachute to avoid intervention by staff. He is survived by his wife and their infant son.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the global wingsuit and BASE-jumping communities, renewing conversations around safety, access controls, and the risks inherent in high-altitude extreme sports.
