During a recent appearance on the All The Smoke podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, Cam’ron shared insights into the genesis of Dipset, highlighting the profound impact Master P’s No Limit Records had on its formation.
Despite the geographical distance from Harlem to New Orleans, Cam’ron explained how the dominance of No Limit Records served as a crucial inspiration for Dipset’s blueprint.
Reflecting on the heyday of No Limit Records, Cam’ron recalled witnessing the fervor surrounding the New Orleans soldiers and the impact it had on the hip-hop scene in New York City. He noted the intensity of the arguments and discussions about artists within the same clique, a phenomenon that intrigued him.
“I used to observe these arguments, like, ‘N***as is really going crazy about n***as who’s in the same clique,’” Cam said of the No Limit hysteria invading New York City back in the day. “So I kinda took all that format to try to make the Diplomat brand.”
Cam’ron went on to describe how the No Limit influence manifested on the streets of New York, with people engaging in No Limit-inspired fights on his block. The distinctive fashion choices, such as wearing camouflage in New York, became synonymous with the No Limit style.
Master P’s ability to create a frenzy in the industry, with artists like Mr. Serv-on, Mystikal, and even featuring Shaq in videos, left a lasting impression on Cam’ron.
“N***as used to have No Limit fights on my block. N***as was in New York wearing camouflage. Master P had n***as going crazy. Mr. Serv-on, Mystikal, it got down with them n***as. Shaq was in the video. They talking about P got $400 million. N***as is going around buying fake tank chains. All type of sh*t. Master P had that sh*t in a frenzy.”
In essence, Cam’ron’s observations of the No Limit Records era served as a catalyst for the formation and branding of Dipset. By adapting elements from Master P’s success, Cam’ron aimed to create a unique identity for Dipset within the hip-hop landscape.
