Arch Manning, the highly touted Texas Longhorns quarterback and projected future NFL No. 1 pick, had one of the toughest games of his young career on Saturday… and social media didn’t hold back.
The Longhorns, ranked No. 1 heading into the weekend, traveled to Columbus to face defending national champion Ohio State. The Buckeyes’ defense smothered Manning, limiting him to just 38 passing yards through three quarters. He finished the night 17-of-30 with 136 yards and a costly interception in Texas’ 14-7 loss.
Manning, son of Cooper Manning and nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli, entered the game under enormous pressure. Many fans had called for him to start last season over Quinn Ewers, and when given opportunities, he delivered flashes of brilliance. But against Ohio State, Manning looked human.
At one point, he was stopped on a crucial 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line and later threw an interception that nearly turned into two. Even with a late chance at redemption… highlighted by a beautiful 30-yard strike… the Buckeyes held strong and shut down Texas’ final drive.
Meanwhile, Ohio State freshman Julian Sayin impressed in his debut, completing 13-of-20 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.
The loss ignited a firestorm online, with critics quick to pounce. A viral post from a New York Jets fan account even joked, “Guys, I don’t think the #Jets should tank for Arch.”
For Manning, it’s a humbling reminder that every young quarterback faces growing pains. Texas will look to bounce back with upcoming matchups against San Jose State, UTEP, and Sam Houston State.
