A devastating shootout in Codorus Township left three police officers dead and two others critically injured Wednesday afternoon, according to Pennsylvania State Police Colonel Christopher L. Paris. Authorities confirmed the gunman was killed after being shot by officers at the scene.
The incident unfolded shortly after 2 p.m. near the 1800 block of Haar Road, south of York. Emergency crews rushed the two surviving officers to WellSpan Hospital, where officials reported they remain in critical but stable condition. The hospital immediately went into lockdown and activated “enhanced security protocols” while treating the victims.
Colonel Paris emphasized during a press conference that investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community, though the scene remains under heavy police presence.
The York County Coroner’s Office confirmed they were called to assist. Multiple agencies responded within minutes of the emergency call, flooding the rural neighborhood with law enforcement vehicles and helicopters.
Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis urged the public on social media to “send prayers to the officers and their families” and encouraged residents to stay alert to law enforcement updates. Attorney General Dave Sunday also confirmed he was heading to York County to oversee the situation.
The motive behind the deadly encounter has not yet been released, but investigators are piecing together what led to this violent standoff that claimed the lives of multiple officers.
