A massive 1,000-pound World War II bomb was unearthed at a Quarry Bay construction site, forcing 6,000 people to evacuate overnight as bomb experts raced to defuse it.
The five-foot U.S.-made explosive, packed with 500 pounds of TNT, was discovered late Friday. Police said it likely dated back to U.S. air raids in the 1940s.
Bomb disposal teams worked through the night in typhoon conditions, finally neutralizing the device by 11:48 a.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported.
