In a shocking incident just days before Weezer’s highly anticipated Coachella performance, bassist Scott Shriner’s wife, Jillian Lauren Shriner, was shot and wounded by Los Angeles police following a tense standoff.
The dramatic encounter unfolded Tuesday afternoon when LAPD officers responded to a call for backup while searching for three misdemeanor hit-and-run suspects in a residential Los Angeles neighborhood. While canvassing the area, officers reportedly encountered a woman in the backyard of a nearby home… later identified as 51-year-old Jillian Lauren Shriner.
According to an LAPD statement, Jillian was holding a handgun and refused repeated commands to drop the weapon. Authorities allege she ultimately raised the firearm toward officers, prompting them to open fire. She was struck by at least one round, retreated into her home, then later surrendered to police.
Emergency responders transported Jillian to a local hospital, where she received treatment for injuries described as non-life-threatening. Despite having no connection to the original hit-and-run investigation, Jillian was booked in absentia for attempted murder. A 9mm handgun was reportedly recovered from the scene.
No officers were hurt during the encounter. Jillian’s bail has been set at $1 million, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Weezer, made up of Scott Shriner, Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, and Brian Bell, is set to perform as a surprise act at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this coming Saturday, April 11. The band has not yet released a statement regarding the incident.
This unexpected development adds a dark twist to what was shaping up to be a celebratory week for the iconic rock band.
