President Donald Trump is signaling a hard-line approach to addressing homelessness and crime in Washington, D.C., calling for the “IMMEDIATE” relocation of homeless individuals “FAR” from the nation’s capital and suggesting he may move to place the city under federal control.
In a series of Truth Social posts on Sunday, Trump doubled down on his stance, announcing a press conference for Monday morning that he said would focus on “ending the Crime, Murder, and Death in our Nation’s Capital.”
This comes days after his administration increased the presence of federal law enforcement in D.C. following reports of a violent attack involving a former DOGE staff member.
While the president does not currently have the full authority to federalize D.C. without congressional action… which would require overturning the 1973 law granting local self-governance… he can temporarily take control of the Metropolitan Police Department during certain emergency situations. Whether those legal thresholds have been met remains uncertain.
“There will be no ‘MR. NICE GUY.’ We want our Capital BACK,” Trump wrote, later adding, “Before the tents, squalor, filth, and Crime, it was the most beautiful Capital in the World. It will soon be that again.”
