There are now two No. 1’s in college basketball. Baylor is No. 1 in the men’s Associated Press(AP) Top 25 and Coaches Poll, and South Carolina is No. 1 in the women’s AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll. South Carolina has been in the top spot pretty much the whole year, but nobody thought Baylor would be this high this soon.
Baylor, the defending champs, started the season No. 8, then dropped to No. 9 in week 2 of the season, and have been moving steadily up since then. Once Purdue was surprisingly beaten by Rutgers last week, Baylor was poised and ready to be in the top spot. But one of the most interesting parts of these rankings is that some schools have both their men’s and women’s teams in the Top 25 rankings.
Baylor is the strongest school with their men’s team ranked No. 1 and undefeated, and their women’s team ranked No. 5 with a 9-1 record. Arizona is the next best school, with their women’s team being No. 4 and the men’s team being No. 8 in the country. The Lady Vols of Tennessee are undefeated and seventh in the country, while the men’s team is 7-2 and ranked 18th.
The Connecticut women are tied for the seventh spot and the men are in the 20th spot with a 9-2 record. The Texas women are seventh with a 7-1 record, and the men’s team is ranked 17th with a 6-2 record. The Iowa State women are No. 12 with a 10-1 record, while the men’s team is undefeated with the 11th ranked team.
The Duke men are ranked No. 2 with a 7-1 record, with the women having an 8-0 record and ranked 15th. The University of Kentucky women are ranked 19th with a 6-3 record. The Kentucky men are a bit better with a 7-2 record but ranked only No. 21. The last university with both teams in the Top 25 is Louisiana State with the men’s team being ranked 19th with a 9-0 record and the women’s team ranked 22nd with a 7-1 record.
This is one of the craziest facts in college basketball this season and one that certainly needs to be talked about. This many universities with both their men’s and women’s basketball teams in the Top 25 is unheard of and is why this season is one for the ages that will hopefully keep getting better and better.
