A peaceful family hike turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after a Massachusetts mother of four suffered a fatal fall while exploring the rocky terrain of Purgatory Chasm State Reservation.
Carolyn Sanger, 49, of Topsfield, was hiking with three of her children and other loved ones on Wednesday afternoon when she tragically slipped and fell approximately 50 to 75 feet from a steep cliffside within the state park. Despite swift efforts from bystanders… including several medical professionals who happened to be nearby… Sanger was pronounced dead at the scene, according to local authorities.
The incident unfolded shortly after 2 p.m., prompting a rapid response from Massachusetts State Police and Sutton Police. First responders arrived at the popular hiking destination to secure the area and begin an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
“The thoughts of the entire department are with the Sanger family during this incredibly difficult time,” Sutton Police shared in a heartfelt message on Facebook.
The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the ongoing investigation is being handled by state police detectives to determine how the fall occurred.
In the wake of the tragedy, the local community has rallied around the Sanger family. A GoFundMe campaign launched to support them had already raised nearly $50,000 by Thursday afternoon, showcasing an outpouring of compassion and solidarity from friends, neighbors, and strangers alike.
Carolyn Sanger is remembered as a loving mother and a cherished member of her community… a woman who leaves behind a legacy of love, family, and strength.
