A devastating incident at a Texas pool party has claimed the life of college basketball player Jamarion Brown, a 23-year-old athlete from Henderson State University. The junior guard was tragically shot in the head during the gathering in Camp County, leading to his untimely death and leaving two others injured.
Authorities responded to multiple emergency calls about gunfire at the party, where Brown was found critically wounded. Despite the rapid arrival of medical crews and air transport support, his condition was too severe for immediate evacuation. He was initially rushed to a nearby hospital, then flown to a medical center in Tyler, where he later passed away.
The Camp County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the arrest of 17-year-old Onterrian Jamour Newton in connection with the shooting. Newton now faces a murder charge, with additional charges pending.
In a heartfelt statement, Henderson State Athletics expressed deep sorrow over Brown’s passing. “Jamarion, known to many as ‘Jo,’ may have only been with us for one season, but his presence left an indelible mark on our community,” the university shared. “His energy, leadership, and passion for the game inspired everyone around him.”
Head basketball coach Jimmy Elgas added, “Jo wasn’t just a talented player… he was the heartbeat of our team. His influence extended beyond the court and into the hearts of everyone at Henderson State. His absence is deeply felt, but his memory will remain a guiding light.”
Brown’s recent season with the Reddies marked his first year at Henderson State after transferring from Southwestern Christian College. He averaged 6.5 points and 3.6 rebounds and was praised not just for his skills, but for his sportsmanship and dedication.
His obituary remembered him as “a beacon of warmth and perseverance,” describing his love for basketball as second only to his love for family. “He lived with intention, inspired by love, and brought light into every space he entered.”
As the investigation continues, the Henderson State community, family, and friends mourn the loss of a young man whose future was filled with promise and purpose.
