A heartbreaking tragedy struck the world of motorsport as two riders lost their lives following a catastrophic 11-bike crash during the British Superbikes Championship at Oulton Park in Cheshire.
The horrifying incident unfolded at the very first corner of the race, triggering an immediate red flag and halting the event. Emergency services were swiftly dispatched to the track, but despite their rapid response, 21-year-old Owen Jenner and 29-year-old Shane Richardson tragically succumbed to their injuries.
Jenner was treated at the scene and rushed to the circuit’s medical centre, but died from a traumatic head injury despite valiant efforts to revive him. Richardson, meanwhile, was transported to Royal Stoke University Hospital with critical injuries but was pronounced dead before arrival.
In total, 11 riders were caught in the high-speed pile-up, which has been described by officials as “catastrophic.” Tom Tunstall, 47, was also hospitalized with serious back and abdominal injuries, while five other competitors sustained minor injuries and were treated at the trackside medical centre.
Cheshire Police confirmed they are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident in coordination with the Motorcycle Circuit Racing Control Board and MotorSport Vision Racing. The Coroner is also involved in determining the full circumstances behind the fatal crash.
Due to the severity of the accident and ongoing medical emergencies, race organizers canceled the remainder of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship event.
