The Weeknd Announces The End Of An Era With A Twitter Name Change
In a significant move, The Weeknd has made a statement about the future of his stage persona by reverting to his birth name on Twitter. This decision follows earlier hints at retiring his iconic moniker, stirring up curiosity among his devoted fanbase.
Over the weekend, the acclaimed Canadian artist, Abel Tesfaye, updated his Twitter handle to his real name, causing a flurry of excitement and speculation. Enthusiasts quickly began theorizing about the implications of this change, while some even organized a symbolic farewell to The Weeknd.
“@theweeknd has generously nourished us with flawlessly timeless music for the past 12 years,” read a tweet that caught The Weeknd’s attention, receiving a retweet from him and garnering praise from his 17 million followers. The tweet continued, “The sheer brilliance of his creations is immeasurable. Whatever the motives behind Abel Tesfaye’s ‘disappearance,’ I respect and support his decision. Above all, I hope it’s a choice he desires.”
Abel Tesfaye has been focusing his efforts on his highly anticipated HBO series, The Idol, which is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on June 4. This provocative and already controversial show features the Toronto superstar in the role of a self-help guru, nightclub owner, and leader of a modern-day cult. The plot revolves around his character’s romance with a pop artist (portrayed by actress Lily-Rose Depp) who seeks to regain her celebrity status.
Exciting news doesn’t stop there, as The Weeknd has also disclosed plans for a companion album titled The Idol Vol. 1, designed to complement the series.
Demonstrating his ambition to make a mark in Hollywood, the talented XO artist will co-write, produce, and star in an upcoming movie alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. In early May, Abel Tesfaye expressed his desire to “kill The Weeknd” and distance himself from his stage name after the release of his next album.
“I’m reaching a point in time where I’m ready to conclude The Weeknd chapter,” he shared with W magazine. “I will still create music, perhaps under Abel or The Weeknd. However, I truly want to let go of The Weeknd persona and be reborn,” he revealed. “Eventually, I will achieve that. I’m determined to shed that skin and embrace a new identity.”
Moreover, he added, “The album I’m currently working on might be my final grand gesture as The Weeknd. It’s a necessary step for me. As The Weeknd, I’ve conveyed everything I wanted to say.”
