The Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly (Aglais Urticae) is the national butterfly of Denmark. They are also found in Europe, Asia Minor, Central Asia, Siberia, China, Nepal, Sikkim Himalayas in India, Mongolia, Korea, and Japan.
These beautiful butterflies are reddish-orange, with black and yellow markings on their wings, with blue spots around the edges. They are in the Nymphalidae family. The adult Small Tortoiseshell butterflies feed on nectar.
These beautiful butterflies are severely affected by drought, which directly affects the Urtica leaves. Small Tortoiseshell butterflies go into hibernation from mid-June into August and typically hibernation in dark sheltered locations.
