The harpy eagle (Harpia Harpyja) is the largest and most powerful species of eagles in the world. So undoubtedly, you would think that you were actually in the tv show “Game Of Thrones” if you somehow came across one of these giant eagles. Although rare, the harpy eagle is found in Brazil, Mexico, Central America, and South America. Harpy eagles are 3 feet 5 inches tall, and their wingspan can reach up to 7 feet 4 inches.
They mainly feed on sloths and monkeys. At several nests in Guyana, monkeys made up about 37% of the prey remains found in harpy eagle nests. These eagles may also take domestic livestock such as:
Chicken, lambs, goats, and young pigs. The males are known to take smaller prey, while the females tend to grab the larger prey. Their rear talons are 5 inches in length, which is bigger than a grizzly bear’s! So, needless to say, this is not a bird you would want to pet unless you are highly trained to do so.
