The precious stone mining company Shefa Yamim in Northern Israel discovered a new mineral that is harder than a Diamond. Carmeltazite, also known as “Carmel Sapphire,” was found encrusted with sapphire during mining in a volcanic rock in Northern Israel’s Zevulun Valley near Mt. Carmel.
The weird thing about this discovery is that this type of sapphire has only been identified in space.
The beautiful new sapphire has been patented as “Carmel sapphire” by an Israeli company and the International Mineralogical Association’s Commission on New Minerals.
