Found in New Guinea and throughout eastern and northern Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory, these bees have evolved.
These bees are wonderful to look at, but here’s what you should know about them… they’re completely mean. They prey on native bees by laying their eggs in the nest of female blue-banded bees.
Their eggs hatch before the other bee’s eggs does most of the time, giving them a better start at life. But, if you’re wondering, can these bees sting? Yes, they sure can. And they can deliver a very nasty sting when they do.
