Tsunami waves reached the United States West Coast on January 15, 2022, causing a terrifying scene. The eruption of an undersea volcano located near the Tonga islands in the Pacific Ocean activated emergency plans from Japan to California.
The National Weather Service issued a tsunami advisory for coastal areas of California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. The National Weather Service did rule out a widespread inundation but urged caution.
“If you are located in this coastal area, move off the beach and out of harbors and marinas,” The National Weather Service advised people.
Tsunami warnings and advisories were also in place for Fiji and American Samoa islands, parts of Australia and New Zealand, Japan, and as far away as South America.
First responders in Northern California said two people were hospitalized in stable condition after being swept into the water while fishing.
Savannah Peterson captured a video of the waves hitting right in front of her door. Peterson shared the video to her Twitter account: @SavlsSavvy.
