A simple car accident in Rockwood, Tennessee, has blown open a massive federal case against one of Mexico’s most feared drug cartels.
What began in 2019 with two dealers hiding meth after a crash led to years of wiretaps, shootouts, and drug seizures… including 850 kilos of meth hidden in a tractor trailer. The trail led straight to the United Cartels and its elusive leader, Juan José Farías Álvarez, known as “El Abuelo” (“The Grandfather”).
The U.S. Justice Department has unsealed indictments against El Abuelo and four top lieutenants, offering $10 million for information leading to his capture. Authorities say the United Cartels control meth production and smuggling routes into major U.S. cities, using profits to fund weapons, mercenaries, and bribery.
“This case shows how a violent cartel in Mexico can send shockwaves into small-town America,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Galeotti.
All suspects are believed to be in Mexico. The U.S. is urging anyone with information to come forward.
