SZA recently shared her candid thoughts on her collaboration with Drake, revealing her brief bout of insecurity during the production of ‘Slime You Out.’ In an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal on October 30, SZA elaborated on her experience, shedding light on her initial apprehensions.
The acclaimed artist explained that the creative process for their joint project took an unexpected turn. When SZA sent Drake a demo recording of her vocals for the song, it was with the intention of refining and re-recording them for the final version. However, her expectations were not met, as Drake opted to retain her initial demo vocals for the official release.
“I just handed in the first draft to Drake, and he’s putting it on his album. I’m scared because I handed in second vocals, and he didn’t use that. And now I’m like, ‘Are you trying to sabotage me?’ I know that’s not true. I literally know that’s not true, but that’s how bad I feel about my first draft. When things come from an effortless space, I almost can’t enjoy it.”
SZA’s honest reflection on her experience provides a glimpse into the creative dynamics of the music industry. The journey of ‘Slime You Out’ showcases the nuanced relationship between two talented artists, illustrating the complexities that can arise during the collaborative process.
Despite her momentary doubts, SZA’s work with Drake remains a testament to the power of artistic collaboration, highlighting the ability to transcend individual insecurities and deliver a remarkable piece of music to their fans.
