Suge Knight, the infamous co-founder of Death Row Records, has recently claimed that Dr. Dre, his former business partner and the acclaimed producer behind some of hip-hop’s most iconic albums, did not produce two of Death Row’s biggest hits: “Doggy Style” and “California Love.”
According to Suge, his upcoming TV series will reveal the truth about how these records were made, allegedly without Dr. Dre’s involvement.
In a recent interview with TMZ Hip Hop, Suge dismissed claims made by Daz Dillinger, a producer, and rapper associated with Death Row Records, that he received $2.5 million from Suge. Suge called Daz’s comments “just Daz running his mouth.” However, Suge had his own story to tell about Daz, alleging that Dr. Dre convinced him to sign over the rights to Snoop Dogg’s classic “Doggy Style” album, which Dre is credited with producing, but which Suge claims was actually ghost-produced by Daz.
Suge is also taking issue with how “California Love,” another hit produced by Dr. Dre, was portrayed in the 2015 film “Straight Outta Compton.” The movie showed Dre and Tupac Shakur creating the song in-studio, but Suge alleges that he actually orchestrated its creation because Dre and Tupac were feuding at the time. Suge credits DJ Quik with coming up with the iconic chorus and recruited the late Roger Troutman to sing it on his voicebox.
Suge’s claims are sure to generate controversy and spark discussions among hip-hop fans.
