A night of celebration turned deadly when gunfire erupted at a packed South Carolina bar, killing at least four people and leaving 20 others injured, according to authorities.
The shooting broke out early Sunday at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island, a popular local spot where hundreds had gathered for a Battery Creek High School alumni party. When deputies arrived, they found chaos… multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds, while others ran to nearby businesses and homes to escape the gunfire.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office confirmed four people died at the scene. At least 20 others were taken to local hospitals, with four reported in critical condition.
Bar owner Willie Turral said he was still in shock, telling WTOC-TV, “You know these things can happen, and you take all the precautions you can, but you never expect it to happen here. I never thought I would see something like this.”
Authorities say they are questioning “persons of interest,” but no arrests have been made. Investigators continue to piece together what led to the mass shooting.
The sheriff’s office has urged the community to remain patient as the investigation unfolds, adding: “This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones.”
