Jermaine Dupri, along with Ludacris, Nelly, and a host of other music icons, lit up the stage in celebration of the 30th anniversary of his legendary So So Def label at the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards.
The awards show, which took place at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center on October 3 and aired on television on October 10, was an unforgettable event that transported the audience back in time, thanks to JD’s nostalgic stage setup reminiscent of the early 1990s.
The stage was adorned with a backdrop featuring iconic artists like Michael Jackson, Run-DMC, and The Fat Boys. An eclectic bed with vintage sheets and a desk that Dupri perched himself at, complete with a turntable and drum machine, set the scene.
Jermaine Dupri, a pioneer in the music industry, kicked off the celebration by performing the opening verse of Kriss Kross’ 1992 hit single, “Jump,” a track he co-produced, bringing a wave of nostalgia to the audience.
Ludacris, another Atlanta native, then graced the stage and delivered a memorable performance of the Southern anthem, “Welcome to Atlanta.” The crowd couldn’t get enough as they were transported back to the essence of the city’s hip-hop culture.
Nelly, known for his chart-topping hits, took the audience on a journey back to 2005 with a captivating rendition of “Grillz,” marking yet another highlight of the evening.
Joining this star-studded celebration were more musical acts who made surprise appearances, including Lil Jon, Chingy, Bow Wow, and Da Brat, just to name a few.
The 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards were a testament to the enduring impact of Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def label and its influence on the music industry, creating a night of nostalgia and entertainment that won’t soon be forgotten.
